Nyepi is a Hindu’s festival day which are celebrated every Caka New Year. Before the day of Nyepi, there are several series of ceremonies performed Hindus in Indonesia. This time we will discuss one of a series of rites performed before Hindu holiday Nyepi, the Melasti.
Melasti an initial series of several series of holiday Nyepi. Melasti usually held about three to one day before Nyepi, based on condition, time, and the local environment (desa, kala, patra).
Place of execution Melasti determined according to local environmental conditions. For the Hindus who live in the mountains, the Melasti held on the lake. When Hindus living near the coast, the Melasti done at sea. Whereas for Hindus who live far from the sea and the lakes, Melasti can be done at the nearest water source.
Why Hindus perform Melasti? Actually Melasti aims to purify "pratima" and objects that purified and to cleanse themselves of impurities (leteh).
Melasti Procession usually involves many people, because the equipment and objects that will be washed very much. However, Hindus are very enthusiastic in following the Melasti procession.
